Connecting with Lisa

Connecting with Lisa, chatting life, Listen to the Flowers, inspiration, and creativity.

I have connected with Lisa, an e-friend where we have made a connection through me, admiring her brand, Listen to the Flowers.

Listen to the Flowers is an Australian born brand created to intersect curiosity with reality. They look to bring you a world where colours dance, and art and functionality are intertwined into one. They created the brand as a place to introduce unique homewares as when looking for home decor in Australia we found there was a space for more fun colourful homewares and unique point of views in the space. They also wanted to create a creative space with home decoration ideas and an outlet for unique content. To try and add vibrancy into more homes and keep the unexpected inspiring and fresh.

Lisa.
Lisa.

Who are you?

Someone who is down to earth, loves to chat, and loves to laugh. I love to travel and explore and try new hobbies.

What sets your soul on fire?

Quality time and conversations with friends and loved ones. I love all my friends and I am so nostalgic so I love catching up with people and talking about our memories together and what we are doing now.

What does a day in your life look like?

I am lucky enough to live by the beach so my days mainly consist of the ocean, working my 9-5, hobbies, and quality time with others.

What do you wish more people knew about you?

I think a lot of my friends know me through work where I can be very analytical and they don’t necessarily know my airy and more creative side. As I get older I find myself going back to a lot of interests I had when I was younger that I lost touch with when I had less time.

Where do you feel most like yourself?

At home chatting away to my partner or my family members. I can be unfiltered and they know me as much as I know myself and that is so comforting.

You’ve got such a rich blend of influences - American, Australian, and your partner’s NZ roots. I’m curious how that all shows up for you day to day. The way you live, what you notice, how it shapes the things you make.

What parts of your story - places, people, upbringing, are showing up in your work lately?

I feel like everything we create has to do with both my story and upbringing and my partners. It’s all the memories, all the places, all the connections. I love staying in contact with friends from all over the world and staying connected with what is happening across the globe, brands, events, etc, I feel like they all weave together to create ideas.

When did you move from the U.S., and what drew you to Australia?

I moved over 11 years ago! I felt like Australia seemed like a more relaxed and less stressful place to live that would suit the lifestyle I was hoping for more. I love having my American roots, I was able to grow up with a huge diversity of cultures, but life is easier in Australia (healthcare!!) and living by the ocean has been such an amazing experience.

What part of Australia are you living in now? How does that space support Listen to the Flowers?

I have lived in south Gold Coast now for 8 years. It has been a great place to start a brand, a lot of my friends are amazing creatives here and have started their own brands so there are a lot of people you can lean on to talk to about ideas and running a business.

When we were chatting about the blog, I really felt what you said, that craving to create a space for creativity, outside the 9–5. I’d love to know more about the behind-the-scenes of how it works and what’s been unexpected along the way.

Where did the name come from?

I came up with the name while watching “Alice in Wonderland”, there is a scene where she is listening to towering flowers talk. I loved that scene and how abstract the name can be in that it can hold different meanings to different people.

What parts of establishing have caught you off guard?

In a good way I have been caught off guard by the small business community and how supportive it is and how amazing it is connecting with other small businesses and brands, has been so great e-meeting other people and learning more about their businesses and watching them grow. In a challenging way I’ve been caught off guard by how hard it is to get into a creative mindset for the brand after working a full day of work!

What do you enjoy most about having Listen to the Flowers?

Honestly I thought what I would enjoy most is bringing creative concepts to life, but that actually comes 2nd to when customers message me about how happy they are with their products, and what it means to them. Seeing people use the products in their own homes has felt so special!

What’s next for Listen to the Flowers?

I have one new product I want to release this year and then I really just want to spend time showcasing our existing product in new ways. I really want to keep the brand considered so that each option can live for a long time and show different ways that they can be used while we grow the brand name. Also I’ve just started partnering with a local supper club (Supper Club Byron Bay) so am really excited to support them in bringing some dinners/events to life!

What are you inspired by lately?

Definitely travel is always inspiring me. You just notice more details of your surroundings when you travel, I feel like I pick up on colours/textures/ideas I haven’t noticed before. I also love looking at interior decorating and fashion blogs and going vintage furniture shopping.

How do you let your partner’s roots and your own feed into the stories you’re telling through your work?

My partner who helps me with the brand is a videographer and true creative and his skillset has helped me so much with establishing what I want for the brand. He really encouraged me to focus on more than just product, and it pushed me to weave some of our other creative moments and projects into the brand. I love posting travel we have done and other creative moments or thoughts that maybe aren’t directly speaking to one of our products but are building blocks and pieces of our brand.

What do you reach for when the ideas feel far away?

If I haven’t been inspired for awhile I just take a break and enjoy other parts of my life. Time away from the phone, walks, other hobbies. When I do have good ideas I try to write them in my notes section so I have a bit of a backlog of ideas to go through when I’m not feeling as inspired as well.

Making something small and personal comes with its own rhythm. There are moments that feel deeply fulfilling, and others that test your patience. You’re balancing freedom with practicality, process with purpose.

What part of your process feels the most natural, and are there any elements that catch you off guard?

I love coming up with product ideas and marketing ideas. Something that I really struggle with though is captions, I hate captions!

What behind-the-scenes challenges would surprise people if they knew?

Not having natural light in the right places in my apartment! I have so many content ideas that would be best done in my apartment so that I could use my kitchen to cook and plate things, or frame against furniture and walls, but I don’t have any natural light past early morning so if I forget to shoot something early morning I can lose my chance to make the content I want. I always will prioritize my personal life first and usually that means taking slow morning and forgetting to use the natural light to my advantage haha

What has it taught you to make something small, slowly, on your own terms?

The biggest thing is learning to stay true to yourself and what you want as a brand even if it means slower initial growth. With social media you can see other brands going viral or growing fast from certain types of creative and it is easy to wonder if you should follow down the same path. But I have found that for me personally I would rather grow a brand slowly that better relays what I want versus trying to quickly jump on a trend.

Where do you hope Listen to the Flowers lands this time next year?

Besides launching 1 new product I just want to use the next year to continue to show how our product can be used in different ways and partnering with people on fun creative projects!
